Photo by Dan Janisse /Windsor StarThe University of Windsor and members of the Windsor-Essex community gathered Thursday for a flag-raising ceremony to help launch Black History Month.

The noon-hour event, which included a number of speakers, kicks off four weeks — and more — of celebration “recognizing people of the Africa Diaspora in Canada and worldwide and their significant contributions to science, technology, arts and entertainment, education, scholarship and more.”

A Black History — Black Futures working group, a collaboration between UWindsor and a number of organizations, including the Black Council of Windsor-Essex and the Essex County Black Historical Research Society, aims to share not only past trials and triumphs but also “speak to the present and the future.”
